Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise method that was developed by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967). He believed that we should be balanced equally in body, mind, and spirit. He concluded that our modern lifestyle, bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the roots of poor health. In order to change that, he developed a regimen of exercises aimed at helping correct muscular imbalances and improve posture, coordination, balance, strength, and flexibility as well as to increase breathing capacity.
He also invented a variety of equipment, based on spring resistance, which could be used to perform these exercises. Pilates is an efficient, effective and safe conditioning method. Even though this method can be a huge help with injury rehabilitation, Pilates is an excellent method for those seeking to refine movement, strengthen core muscles, and increase body awareness.
What is Pilates Equipment?
I AM PILATES is fully equipped with the Pilates equipment with a Reformer, Caddilac or Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair and High Barrel. They were all designed by Joseph Pilates and, with the exception of the High Barrel, they are all based on spring-resistance. Joseph Pilates was, for sure, a man ahead of his time.
What can I expect at my first session?
If you have never done Pilates before, we will require you to do an private Initial Consultation. At your first appointment, Carolina will go through the basic concepts of Pilates, movement analysis and postural assessment. At this session, Carolina will get to know your history, any medical conditions you might have, your goals/needs, and give you a 'sneak peak' at the studio equipment. The Initial Consultation is a great opportunity to have a one-on-one with your instructor who can then tailor a program for you. And most importantly, you can expect to have a great time!
What should I wear?
Pilates is based on movement and precision, so you'll want to wear comfortable exercise clothes, and preferably clothes that aren't too lose. For hygiene purposes, clean socks are also required. Shoes are NOT required.
Please feel free to bring a sweat towel and a bottle of water.
Am I going to lose weight?
Since Pilates is a low impact method where your heart rate is not going to be elevated, you won’t burn enough calories to lose weight. What you will experience though, is an increase of strength, improved flexibility and posture, and increased muscle tone - so you might lose centimetres but not weight.
For more information on this subject, please have a chat with your instructor.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
To achieve your goals, we strongly recommend attending 2 to 3 sessions per week. That said, it all depends on your personal goals, needs, availability, and budget.
What is the difference in between Private and Semi-private Studio Sessions?
In a private session you will have a one hour one-on-one session with your instructor. These sessions are recommended for clients who are brand new to Pilates and need a better understanding of the Pilates method and for clients who prefer having the instructors attention for their own.
A semi-private session is a session with up to three clients per instructor. Even though this is a shared hour, you will still have the instructor's guidance and your own exercise program.
